US Gamer Becomes First World of Warcraft Millionaire

News | July 17, 2008 (1 month ago) | von Mera_LaCroisadeEcarlate | Filed in World of Warcraft

I won't link the original article because it is containing links to a website selling gold which is against Blizzard's rules. Below is the copy of this surprising article:

Whilst America is suffering an economic downturn, gas prices rise day after day and the dollar weakens under pressure, one American is going against this trend; virtually. An avid Internet gamer from Chicago IL, known only as Jake, has made history by making the largest purchase of “virtual currency” ever reported. He did so through the game World of Warcraft, purchasing 1,000,000 Gold (the game’s currency) at a cost of just over $40,000.

The exchange of “real money” for its virtual gaming equivalent, whilst an insane concept to many, is nothing new. Real-Money Trading, or RMT companies as they are better known, have been around since the early days of Ultima Online but only became newsworthy with the release of World of Warcraft. The game’s population of almost 11 million subscribers makes it a lucrative marketplace for third-party companies, with no shortage of customers and suppliers (though the majority of the industry’s “product” is sourced through China). Industry analysts have predicted the RMT market to be worth around $2 billion in 2008, with a large proportion of that coming for World of Warcraft.

Though many gaming addicts will admit to purchasing virtual currencies and services, perhaps spending as much as a couple hundred dollars at a time, one wonders why someone would spend so much money on what is essentially pixels on a computer screen.

“My friends ask me, ‘You could have bought a car, a boat or put down a deposit on a house - why waste all that money on a game?’. I don’t like cars, I get sea-sick and I already own a couple of properties of my own.”, Jake contends. “I find less sense in blowing $40,000 on a BMW - at least WoW Gold retains its value.” You can almost understand his point - almost. After all, expendable income is all about enjoyment, whether it’s expensive holidays, a luxury sports car or the ability to own (literally) your friends at your favorite game. But still…

The lucky recipients of this record order were <censored>, <censored> provider of WoW Gold, based out of <censored>. “When we saw the order request come in, we just laughed; it’s not unusual to get joke requests”, said <censored>, the Customer Service Leader managing the shift the order came in on. “But the guy persisted and provided us with a phone number that matched up with his registered address. When we realized that this might be a serious order, we took the steps to further verify Jake’s identity and the validity of his request with his bank.” Within a few days the deal was done and Jake was on his way to being what must certainly be the only World of Warcraft millionaire on the planet… though he’ll have to spread the wealth over atleast 5 characters as the currency limit for a single player (only ever acheived twice before in the game’s history) is just over 210,000 Gold.

Jake plans to gear up his characters with the best of everything the game has to offer, but he’s not forgotten his fellow guild members either. His girlfriend, also a World of Warcraft player, was pleasantly surprised when she found a 50,000 Gold 21st birthday gift from Jake in her in-game mailbox. It’s no diamond ring, but it’s pretty close in WoW!

Reading the comments it seems like a bunch of sour grapes to me.
I wish I had the kind of money to blow on whatever passing fancy grips me.
Spend money on cars you won't drive, houses you won't live in, hookers and drugs, or wow gold... time is ticking away, enjoy what you have.
Persoanlly, I'd use the gold to fund a wow slave army and play at large guild eradication... but that's just me.

I hope they ban his account. My account was hacked a few months ago and i lost 10K in gold and stuff. Took me 2 months to get my stuff back and lots of lost play and aggravation for it. that cash he bought was obtained from people whose accounts are hacked. he should be taken out and shot. He is a fucking asshole for contributing to all this.

Gave his girlfriend 50,000 gold, that's just fucking sad. I bet he bought his girlfriend on eBay

What a moron. As others have said, if this is real he can enjoy being banned and losing his $40k RL money. Second, and I may be wrong as I haven't played Wow for that long, I was under the impression that the best gear in game cannot be just purchased but that you have to earn the rep with various factions or get it from doing high level raids or battle grounds/arenas.

In addition, if this is real, way to go helping the gold farmers continue to break the law and ruin the game. I hope Blizzard tracks him down and sues his backside for any money he has left in the real world. Blizzard really ought to implement a 'banned for life' policy and disallow people like this from EVER playing the game again. What a dill weed.

wouldnt it be easy for the wow GM to ban his acct as not many folks have 1 mil gold and its pretty obvious when 5 accts get 200K all at once

I hope with a passion that Blizzard takes this as an attempt to fund gold selling and sues "Jake" directly. This is a load of (#$&*#($ that will only serve to make the lives of everyone else in the game, especially on that server, miserable.

I posted my last comment without reading the ones below me, my guess guys is this is 100% legit. Don't forget this is America we are talking about...Most of us are completely retarded with our money (especially those with tons to blow) and he probably did this for the publicity.

My only real question now is where the hell is whatever company he bought it from going to farm the gold to supply his order without drawing attention to themselves?

it sounds like this jake was pretty well off to begin with, if there is any truth to the part about him owning more than one property. Naturally putting money into your hobby is the next logical step if everything else is in order, so i can see why he chose to apply his money to gaming, but buying gold is obviously the wrong way to go about it.

Not for nothing - I have bought gold before (I won't lie) - but dropping 40k on some gold sounds like a good way to get your account banned permanently. Not to mention where does this kid get 40k cash to spend on a video game and is dating someone who wasn't even 21 yet... I wonder how the economy on his server is going to be after he starts spending that gold... I hope for their sake the players on that realm start transfering to a different one before copper ore is 100g/stack...

And blizzard tracks the movement of 250,000 gold to four accounts, shuts him down, removes the gold from the system and bans Jake. He can't cancel the order, because the services were rendered, he loses his account and his internet gold.

Another satisfied idiot.

Probably a fake, created by RTM compagnie to make some pub about buy gold and don't get caught.

Logic:
-big purchase should have yeild a lower price than the current market
-Credit card compagny would probably "block" by default a transaction on a compagny usually having pretty low money transaction (ie: 100-200$, vs 40,000)
-Honestly, there is no way someone can move 1,000,000 gold from account to account and stay under the radar, even spread over a few days...

don't speculate so much.. I'm just reader like you who think this is an interesting story to put in the news, and I have myself <censored> the links bcuz I knew it would have been never approved by curse moderators with full links and that was anyway not ethically correct with blizzard policies. shame on gold sellers yes but not on curse you're wrong.. so -1

Fast way for a ban, even if I was a IRL billionaire and actually condoned evil gold selling, I wouldn't buy that much gold since it will just get deleted. Jake is either retarded or fiction.

Fake, it's an ad. Gold sellers are stepping up their game.

Could be but It does not look like because the blog I took this from does not have another post linking to the same seller website, the only post which I see having a link is a link to the auctioneeraddon.com website, any other blog post is just a few comments about wow and gold but nothing at all to promote something without any links. The fake probability is really really low.

considering he's going to have the wealthiest account in wow i don't think it will be hard to track. I know there are likely some that came by a ton of gold legit, but none of them went from penniless to millionaire.....what a idiot. Exactly how do you transfer that much gold without Bliz noticing? They have that retarded waiting period for auctions....lvl 1 carrying 210,000 gold might tip them off as well cuz you know the gold seller isnt going to jeopardize his farming character or account
